Sammy Khagayi is a statistician and epidemiologist working at the intersection of climate change and population health in Africa. He is based at AHRI, where his work focuses on using longitudinal population data, health and demographic surveillance systems, and advanced epidemiological methods to understand how climate-sensitive exposures affect health outcomes in vulnerable communities. His work applies statistical, spatial, and epidemiological approaches to quantify health risks linked to climate-related hazards, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa.
His methodological experience includes analysis of cohort and HDSS data, modified Poisson and multilevel models, spatial exposure assessment, climate data integration, and policy-relevant burden estimation.
Sammy is also actively involved in regional and international climate-health collaboration, including work linked to the African Population Cohorts Consortium, HDSS platforms, and capacity-building initiatives connecting climate science, epidemiology, and health modelling. Through this work, he is interested in strengthening African-led evidence generation and supporting the translation of climate-health research into practical tools, policy, and public health action.
