Dr Astrid Treffry-Goatley is a senior researcher at the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She specialises in health research, community engagement, and creative practice. As a co-investigator and work-package lead for the WEMA project, Astrid leads community engagement activities investigating the impact of extreme weather events on human well-being in four African settings. With a passion for transdisciplinary, ethical, and creative strategies, Astrid aims to drive social justice and community-led change. In addition to the WEMA project, she leads the Public Squares Programme at Stellenbosch University, advancing transdisciplinary research capacity through targeted training and support.
Astrid has a background in music studies, ethnography, and film/media studies and has coordinated numerous participatory visual method (PVM) projects since 2010. These projects focus on marginalized populations, addressing health issues such as HIV drug resistance, climate-sensitive health risks, and gender-based violence. She has led and collaborated on several competitive, grant-funded projects, including those supported by The Wellcome Trust, The Ford Foundation, and The Spencer Foundation. Astrid is also an expert in ethical visual research, having worked with vulnerable communities in Southern Africa and North America to address complex social issues, including gender inequality and gender-based violence.
